Mandy Hunter: a true community champion who makes our town stronger

I was pleased to lodge a motion in the Scottish Parliament recognising Mandy Hunter and her extraordinary 30 years of service at the Linton Lane Centre.

For three decades, Mandy has been a constant presence at the centre of community life in Kirkcaldy. Under her guidance, the Linton Lane Centre has evolved from a simple building to a place where people find support, friendship, purpose and belonging.

From hosting Kirkcaldy Foodbank and supporting vulnerable families, to providing a home for community groups, youth activities, carers, veterans, senior citizens and local cultural organisations, the centre has become a lifeline for many. Through every challenge and every success, Mandy has been there helping to guide it forward.

Mandy has never sought recognition for herself, instead, she has championed others, created opportunities for people to come together and continually promoted the belief that strong communities are built by ordinary people making an extraordinary effort for one another.

The story of the Linton Lane Centre is, in many ways, the story of Kirkcaldy itself.

Ours is a town with proud traditions of community spirit, resilience and mutual support. While it is easy to focus on challenges, people like Mandy remind us of the tremendous strengths that exist within our communities. Every week, volunteers, organisers and local groups give their time to improve the lives of others, often without thanks or recognition.

That is why celebrating people like Mandy matters.

It shines a light on the positive contribution that community organisations make every day and reminds us that we all have a role to play. Whether it is joining a local group, supporting a community event, volunteering a few hours of our time or simply reaching out to a neighbour, participation strengthens the social fabric that holds our communities together.

My motion is a fitting recognition of Mandy Hunter’s remarkable contribution, but it is also a celebration of the values she embodies. Her dedication, warmth and unwavering commitment have touched countless lives across Kirkcaldy.

On behalf of everyone who has benefited from her work over the last 30 years, thank you, Mandy. Kirkcaldy is stronger because of people like you.
