Fife has many unsung heroes who have gone the extra mile to help others during the coronavirus lockdown. They are working hard behind the scenes to make sure that our buses still run, our prescriptions dispensed, and our services all keep ticking over. They deserve their moment in the spotlight as part of our Big Thank You.

Fiona Malone is a catering supervisor at Kirkcaldy West Primary School, and volunteered to help provide school meals to vulnerable youngsters, and key workers kids.

Fiona said: “It definitely has been challenging to stick to all the social-distancing rules. You have to be really vigilant and make sure that the children don’t get too close.

“The hubs I work at are Burntisland Children’s Activity Centre, Fair Isle and Fair Isle Nursery. No two days are the same – the children can be there all day or a half day, it all depends on what job the parents do.”

All the meals Fiona and her team supply are fresh homemade meals.

She said: “We run a two-week menu. We make meals like fish and chips, chicken korma, and meatballs. Today it was hotdogs and potato wedges. We don’t use microwaves – everything we cook is nutritionally balanced.

“The kids also get a snack throughout the day as well, which might be sandwiches or cheese and crackers with a drink of milk or water.”

At the start of the pandemic Fiona had some fears of what lay ahead, but now says she is soldiering on by focusing on work.

“ I’m always watching my distancing and I am able to focus on my work to take my mind of any worries. I’m glad I’m not stuck in the house.”

“Hopefully we can get back to normal.”
