Fife has many unsung heroes who have gone the extra mile to help others during the coronavirus lockdown. They are working hard behind the scenes to make sure that our buses still run, our prescriptions dispensed, and our services all keep ticking over. They deserve their moment in the spotlight as part of our Big Thank You.

Chargehand Ronnie White has been making sure that our bins are emptied regularly during lockdown.

That has meant changes to work patterns – and getting used to social distancing.

Ronnie said: “At the start of my day I have to make sure that the lorry is cleaned. We always keep them pretty clean but now they are sterile clean. Once that is done, we are ready to start our routes .

“There are normally three of us in the cab, but because of social-distancing rules we can only have two in at the same time.

“The second loader follows behind us in a van and we meet at the start of the route. We have to plan routes differently to make sure that they doesn’t have miles to walk to get back to the van.”

Since the start of lockdown Ronnie said the public have been supportive of the crews.

He said: “People have been leaving us cards and messages on their bins to thank us for all the good work that we are doing. One wee boy told us that we are his heroes. It gives us a boost and lifts our spirits.

“When lockdown first started people were clapping and cheering for us when we came down their streets. It was a little bit embarrassing at the time because to me I’m just doing my job.
