Kirkcaldy High Street free parking pilot project to be made permanent

An hour of free parking is to be made permanent in part of Kirkcaldy town centre after a successful 18-month trial.

If councillors at next week’s Kirkcaldy area committee agree, the initiative will continue at parking bays between Kirk Wynd and Oswald Wynd in the east end of the High Street.

Parking bays have been free for one hour, Monday to Saturday - up to a maximum 60-minute stay - and no time limits on Sundays. The pilot came about after feedback from local traders.

A report to councillors said: “A number of initiatives have taken place in Kirkcaldy in recent years to help generate additional town centre footfall. These have included discounted rates for parking, discounted season tickets and variations of the High Street pedestrian zone timings to help pedestrian movements as well as still providing reasonable vehicular access for High Street business deliveries and disabled access.”

While the pilot project was in place, the council carried out an online consultation, and no formal objections were received.

The report said the move had “provided sufficient opportunity to consider the benefits and mitigate impacts of the sections of free parking on the High Street.”

It added: “Feedback has been positive and the lack of objections suggests there are no negative impacts.” Councillors will consider the matter next week.
