Kirkcaldy racer Jonny Adam targets British GT record

The Aston Martin ace will equal the record number of race wins in the championship if he and team mate Darren Johnston claim first place on Sunday.

The TF Sport pair currently lead the drivers standings by eight and a half points going into the penultimate round of the campaign.

“At the moment I’m sitting on nine British GT victories,” Adam told the Press.

“If I get a 10th this weekend I would equal two other drivers who are no longer in the championship.

“There’s a bit of history to be made at some point – whether this year or next – to potentially try to become the most successful driver ever in British GT.

“I’ve been in it long enough – this is my sixth year – and it would be a nice reward, but the main focus this weekend is to make sure we stay in the lead in the championship ahead of the final round at Donington.”

The omens are certainly good for Adam going into Snetterton – he claimed race wins at the Norfolk circuit in both 2015 and 2014.

“It’s a good circuit for me, and for the car,” he said.

“We’ve not been on the podium since the end of April. We had two brilliant victories at the start of the year but we’ve been a bit light on the rostrum since then.

“We’re looking to bounce back this weekend and really try to secure the plumb seat in the championship.”

Adam is combining his British GT title defence with other championship challenges this year, including the Blancpain Endurance Series, which saw him compete in one of the world’s toughest endurance races, the Spa 24 Hour in Belgium, with Oman Racing last weekend.

“It’s the big race of the year but we had a bit of bad luck,” Adam explained.

“Just after the six hour mark we were leading our class, and at one stage we were leading the race overall, which was great for the team.

“Then unfortuantely, during the night, there was an incident involving one of our drivers, Darren Turner, through no fault of his own.

“He was racing with other cars when one of the drivers decided to make it four abreast going into one of the corners and unfortunately Darren was sandwiched between two cars.

“It didn’t look badly damaged, but we were losing a little bit of fluid so we had to pit and lost 22 minutes altogether, which was about seven and a half laps.

“Thereafter the car was absolutely fine all the way through and we finished 24th overall and seventh in class.

“We were just robbed. If that little bit of bad luck hadn’t happened we would have been on course to at least get a podium if not challenge for the victory.”

Adam’s team is currently third in the Blancpain standings ahead of the final round at Nurburgring, Germany in September.

“On paper we’ve still got a chance of winning the championship but everything has to fall our way,” he said.

“If we can just push for top three that will be a reward for what has been a bit of an unluckly season in the Blancpain.”
