Tributes to the late King of Queen

All over the media this week the talk is of Freddie Mercury of Queen who would have 80 this week but whose life was cut tragically short with his illness.

Thirty-five years after his death his shy girlfriend has at last been talking to the press about their relationship.

Mary Austin has so many memories and treasures including a book of lyrics which she publishes this month.

Meanwhile there have been TV programmes about his days with Queen and several stage shows at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, coinciding with his birthday week.

Local amateur group Dalgety Players take to the stage at the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline from Thursday to Saturday with the famed stage musical ‘We Will Rock You’.

With a live band on stage, they have chosen this explosive musical to celebrate their 50th anniversary year. If taking on the music of Take That in ‘The Band’ musical was a challenge for them back in March, then the iconic music of Queen will be just one more step in their impressive history.

The story of the musical took off in 2000 when Ben Elton was approached by Brian May and Roger Taylor for ideas based on their music and within a year it was drafted as a script.

By May 2002 it had opened in the West End.

Characters from the Queen song book feature and Galileo here will be played by young Theo Hart, who had a sold-out Fringe show last year and was key to the success of ‘The Band’ for Dalgety Players.

Joining the young cast will be Bethan Laing as Scaramouche, Freya Riley as the Killer Queen, and Abbie Reid as Oz. David Mutch plays Khashoggi, Michael Nicol is Brit, Andrew Cunningham is Buddy and The Teacher role goes to Emma Parsley.

They are supported by a massive ensemble of 75 so a packed stage will result in rocking the Carnegie to its foundations.

Tickets are from OnFife. Evening performances at 7:15pm with Saturday matinee at 2:15pm.
