The news came this afternoon on BBC Scotland’s Off the Ball radio show, hosted by Tam Cowan and Stuart Cosgrove, that the current plan is to ease restrictions on April 26.

Professor Leitch was asked by one caller if there was a chance of travelling outwith council areas during the Easter Holidays in early April.

He replied: “That’s not impossible, but that would require the cabinet to make some choices about that.

"That’s not the present plan.

"But if incidence continues to fall, that might be possible, but we’d have to think very carefully about that.

"The present plan is travel restrictions eased on the 26th.”

The date had previously been touted as a possible time for Scotland to move into Level 3 restrictions, with the reopening of pubs and restaurants.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s provisional roadmap also mentioned that gyms and swimming pools could reopen on that date.

On the radio programme, Professor Leitch was also asked asked about what football fans can do to ensure the Old Firm clash between Rangers and Celtic goes ahead, Professor Leitch said that it would involve fans respecting the restrictions.

He said: “Get the message out, tell the fans to stay at home.

"Stay at home, watch the game on telly, celebrate digitally.”

The game is pencilled in for Sunday, March 21, but recent mass gatherings by Rangers fans has thrown the match into doubt, with the Scottish Government saying it could be postponed.
