Landmark year on national and world stage for Fife pipe band

The City of St Andrews Pipe Band has enjoyed a remarkable competition season, establishing itself as the leading force in the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association Grade 4A pipe band competition level, and bringing considerable distinction and kudos to the town.

The highlight came at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow in August, when the band finished runner-up in the Grade 4A world final.

Although the title went to Ireland’s Carrigaline Pipe Band, St Andrews had plenty to celebrate, with its second-place finish capping an outstanding season under the stewardship of Pipe Major Paul Donaldson.

There was further success with the award of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association’s 2026 Champion of Champions title.

The band topped the Grade 4A table with 21 points, earned across the major championship series. Its tally included first places at the European and Scottish Championships, alongside strong performances at the British Championships and the Worlds.

The European Championships, held in Perth in June, were a particular triumph.

It won Grade 4A, with its drum corps also taking the top drumming award. As a result of its competitive success, the band has secured promotion to RSPBA Grade 3B for the 2027 season, marking an important new chapter for the organisation.

It is also launching a new development band for the season ahead which will provide further opportunities for developing musicians.

The band performs at numerous public, civic and corporate events throughout the year. It also competes at contests and championships across the country providing great opportunities for learners and experienced musicians alike.

With strong university links, it welcomes students alongside local players. To join, or find out more, visit www.facebook.com/Cosapipeband
