Finding the next step after school: Fife College outlines what it has to offer

As exam season begins, students and parents across Fife are starting to think seriously about what comes next. For many, the answer might be closer — and more flexible — than they think. At Fife College, students from all walks of life are discovering new opportunities, gaining skills, and building bright futures, right here in their own communities.

Whether you’re leaving school, changing careers, returning to education, or simply ready for something new, Fife College has an option for you — from entry-level courses and apprenticeships to HNCs, HNDs, and full degrees.

Here are just a few of the inspiring stories from students who made that choice — and haven’t looked back.

Stewart Paton began his journey at Fife College as part of the School College Partnership programme in 2018. From there, he progressed through an NC, HNC, HND, and is now completing his honours degree in BA Childhood Studies. His next step? A postgraduate teaching degree at the University of Edinburgh.

“Fife College has really helped me gain the confidence to go on and become a teacher. The support from the lecturers has been incredible. If it wasn’t for the college, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Kyle Anderson-McGregor is chasing big goals in the kitchen — and making great progress. Studying Advanced Professional Cookery, he’s already gained industry experience through the Chef Ambassadors Programme, including a standout event at Murrayfield Stadium.

“I’d highly recommend Fife College. I’ve learned so much — not just how to cook, but how to thrive in a real kitchen environment. My dream is to be a head chef by the time I’m 30.”

Katie Wansell is currently studying Level 5 Travel and Tourism, with hopes of joining the cabin crew in future. Her course has already opened doors to real-world experience, including a placement with the StAnza Poetry Festival in St Andrews.

“It’s been a great course — from learning about sustainability and customer service to gaining experience outside the classroom. The lecturers are so supportive and there are loads of opportunities.”

For Nichola King, a chance encounter while out shopping became a turning point. After leaving night-shift cleaning work behind, she found her passion in Painting and Decorating — and hasn’t looked back.

“I didn’t think college was for people like me. But now, three years later, I’ve just secured an apprenticeship and placed third in a national skills competition. I’m in my 30s, in a trade, and finally doing what I’ve wanted to do since I was 16.”

Liam Brown began with an HND in Administration and IT, worked his way through a Business Management degree, then progressed to a Masters in Marketing at the University of Dundee. Today, he works with Young Enterprise Scotland, delivering workshops to college students — just a few years after being in their shoes himself.

“Fife College gave me the skills and the belief to keep going. It’s more than just a qualification — it’s about growing as a person. The support, the community, the people — I wouldn’t be where I am without it.”

At Fife College, the focus isn’t just on learning — it’s about building confidence, connections, and careers. With over 600 progression routes to a degree, strong links to local industry, and flexible learning options, students can shape their education around their life — not the other way around.

Fiona McLeod, a lecturer in Hospitality, said: “We create realistic environments, so students gain real industry experience. It’s about preparing them for the world of work — and having fun along the way.”

Kieran McLoughlin, from Performing Arts, added: “We train students at a high level, with real-life projects and collaboration. It’s hard work, but it’s engaging and rewarding. We take their potential seriously.”

Whether you’re leaving school, switching careers, or simply exploring new options, there’s never been a better time to take the next step.
