Tony Roper’s poignant farewell to The Steamie as it comes to Fife theatre
A landmark tour of the much loved show, The Steamie, opens in Fife this week.
Its performances at the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline mark the very the last time the classic Scottish show will be directed by its writer, Tony Roper.
He created The Steamie 40 years ago and will bow out as director at the age of 85.
Set in a 1950s Glasgow washhouse on Hogmanay, The Steamie follows Magrit, Dolly, Doreen and Mrs. Culfeathers as they work through the last wash of the year, swapping stories and gossip as they go. With songs by David Anderson, the play has been a favourite with Scottish audiences since it was first staged in 1987.

This production stars Ali Cleland as Magrit, Louise McCarthy as Dolly, Eden Barrie as Doreen, Paul J Corrigan as Andy, the washhouse handyman, and Olivier Award-winner Lesley Mackie as Mrs. Culfeathers.
A spokesperson for the Alhambra said: “So many people in Fife have isf The Steamie, whether they saw it the first time round or have grown up watching it on TV. Having it here on the tour where Tony Roper directs it for the last time makes these few nights really special for us!”
The Steamie runs at the Alhambra from Thursday, October 29 to Saturday 31st, with evening performances at 7.30pm each night and matinees at 2.30pm on Thursday and Saturday.
