Fife Flyers’ road win is huge step to Challenge Cup qualification
Fife Flyers’ quest to secure a place in the next stage of the Challenge Cup got off to the perfect start with a huge 3-2 road win at Dundee Stars on Saturday night.
The result put a firm grip on second spot in their qualifying group, and delighted a big travelling support in the 1600 crowd.
They made the better start, taking the lead at 4:13 when Xander Lamppa's shot was tipped in front by Michael Drábek - making an immediate impact on his return from injury - to beat Carl Stankowski.
Flyers then doubled their advantage at 12:16 when Mika Partanen's long stretch pass found Mike Petizian, who broke clear and finished his breakaway opportunity to make it 2-0 at the first intermission.

Stars produced a solid pushback in the second period and were back on level terms by the halfway point.
They opened their account at 22:39 after a poor giveaway allowed Joshua Nelson to skate in from halfway and beat netminder Jordan McLaughlin with a high finish.
Stars then drew level on the powerplay at 29:23 when Travis Ewanyk put home a rebound in front, completing their comeback from two goals down.
Flyers had the last word in the period, however, and it proved to be the winning goal.
On the powerplay at 32:54, Michael Drábek's initial shot was saved by netminder Stankowski, but the rebound fell to Zack Power, who fired home from an angle.
The closing stages of the third period, Jordan McLaughlan produced a number of big saves to deny the Dundee side who pulled their own netminder in the closing two minutes in a futile bid to find a game-tying goal.
Stars also failed to deliver on a powerplay with just 1:49 left on the clock, allowing the points to return back to the Kingdom.
Tim Wallace, head coach, said: “It was a scrappy game - not the prettiest, and a little too cute for my liking and our liking, but I liked our third period. We stuck with it and didn’t give a whole lot, and Jordan made some big saves at the end. Dundee were technically out of it, but put up a good fight,”
